Unit Objectives: - To understand and be able to explain how sexually transmitted infections are transmitted, treated and prevented as well as being able to identify short and long term symptoms specific to each STI. - To examine the social and mental/emotional repercussions of having an STI. - To develop strategies to discuss safe(r) sexual practices with a partner and recognize the barriers associated with communicating these messages with a partner. - To understand how to access STI prevention information, contraception, and testing services. - To understand and be able to explain how various barrier and hormonal methods of contraception work, how they are used, and where they can be obtained. - To examine the effectiveness, as well as advantages and disadvantages to various methods of contraception. - To examine and reflect on the risks associated with being sexually active and develop strategies to discuss those issues with a potential partner.
